Can a kitchen island have a different stone than the perimeter surfaces?

Yes. An island can coordinate with the surrounding kitchen without matching it exactly. A contrasting color, pattern or material can help define the island as a focal point while still working with the cabinetry and other finishes.

How far can stone extend past an island for seating?

The appropriate overhang depends on the material, slab thickness, cabinet construction and support beneath the stone. Larger extensions may require additional support, so the intended seating arrangement should be discussed before fabrication.

Can a sink or cooktop be installed in a stone kitchen island?

Yes. Openings can be fabricated for sinks and cooktops when the appliance or fixture specifications are established in advance. Their placement also needs to work with the cabinetry and utilities below.

Bar & Island Countertops Harrisonburg VA, Stone Surfaces

Kitchen islands and bars often do more than provide another work surface. They may need room for seating, meal prep, serving, storage, sinks or appliances, which makes the layout especially important before the stone is fabricated. Granite, quartzite and quartz offer a wide range of looks for these larger focal points. Browse our natural stone collection to see materials with individual movement and variation.

A large island can also showcase portions of a slab that may be less noticeable on smaller surfaces. Veining direction, slab dimensions, overhang depth and the location of cutouts are considered as the design develops. For projects that include surrounding work areas, our kitchen countertops can be coordinated with the island without requiring every surface to use the exact same material or pattern.

Seating areas require particular attention to dimensions and support, while sinks and cooktops introduce additional openings into the slab. Through custom countertop fabrication, these project details are incorporated into the finished piece before it reaches the installation stage. Material thickness, exposed edges and transitions to nearby surfaces are considered as part of the overall layout.

Bring your kitchen plans or island dimensions to our Harrisonburg showroom to compare slabs and discuss the possibilities for your project.
