What stone can be used around a fireplace?

Several natural stone materials may be suitable, but the correct choice depends on the fireplace, application, heat exposure and material characteristics. Fireplace manufacturer requirements should also be considered before selecting a surface.

Can you fabricate both the fireplace surround and hearth?

Yes. Individual pieces can be fabricated for the surround and hearth according to the project's measurements and design, provided the planned application is appropriate for the selected material.

Can stone extend from the fireplace to the ceiling?

A larger stone feature may be possible depending on the wall, material, design and installation requirements. Floor-to-ceiling applications require additional planning beyond a conventional surround.

Stone Fireplace Surrounds & Hearths Harrisonburg VA, Stone

Stone around a fireplace becomes part of the architecture of the room rather than simply another surface. A surround may frame the firebox, extend to a mantel or become part of a larger floor-to-ceiling feature. Natural materials such as marble can introduce distinctive veining, while other stone selections offer different textures and movement. Our natural stone collection provides a starting point for comparing the appearance of individual slabs.

Fireplace projects can include several separate components, including the surround, hearth and adjoining wall areas. Dimensions around the firebox, corners and transitions need to be established before fabrication begins. For designs that carry stone farther across or up the wall, our stone cladding and feature walls install can help create a more substantial architectural element rather than limiting the material to the immediate fireplace opening.

Material suitability is particularly important around a heat-producing appliance. The fireplace type, manufacturer's clearance requirements and intended stone application should be established before the project moves forward. Our stone fabrication capabilities allow pieces to be cut and finished around the dimensions of the planned surround and hearth once those specifications are confirmed.
